Term 2 began with a bang with a program on water safety and also with Kontiki happening that same weekend (please read Brent’s Kon-Tiki article!) Declan van Pallander and Declan Johnson completed their Leaping Wolves and moved up to scouts. We are very proud of them and wish them well on their scouting journey!
Our leaders are endlessly creative in coming up with new ways to teach the cubs the various concepts in our programmes (like telling the time with staves!) and this is usually great fun! An annual event that 1st Claremont participates in is the worldwide City Nature Challenge and this year was no exception.
Akela ran the First Aid & Health and Civil Emergency badges course for not just our cubs, but also other eligible cubs from our district. This is a course that we run every year and which the cubs wait to turn 10 years old for, so that they can attend. We had perfect weather for our hike up to the ruins in Newlands forest, which the Cubs loved.
Over the next few weeks we ran programmes on personal, road and home safety. Hathi then ran a program on indigenous games, which showcased our national theme for the year (Our Heritage).
And a fantastic finale to our term was our cultural food evening where cubs sampled cuisine from different cultures – from chicken feet with pap, kourabiedes (Greek biscuits) and lassi (Indian yoghurt drink) to the more well-known melktert, koeksisters and scones with cream.
We welcomed four new cubs and two new adult leaders and we look forward to an exciting and lively term three!
