Leader Profile – Lucy du Toit

New Akela for Cubs in 2023

A bit about me: Hi, I’m Lucy du Toit and I took over as Akela of the Cub Pack in the beginning of 2023.  Its been a fun term getting to know the Cubs and the amazing adult leadership team that we have leading our Pack and the 1st Claremont Group.  I was a Meerkat adult leader from 2020 till the end of 2022, so coming up to the Pack was a natural move.  I have 2 children at Cubs and one still at Meerkats.

As a family we enjoy the outdoors, hiking, camping, sailing, rock climbing, as well as bird watching, rock pooling and botanizing.  I homeschool my 3 kids and love learning with them.  I am a Botanist/Ecologist by trade and worked in the Environmental Sector for many years.  I now work part time in the environmental education space.

Some past Scouting highlights:  I was a Brownie and Girl Guide at 3rd Somerset West.  I loved the camps that we went on, participating in Kontiki (both as shore crew and on the raft), overnight hiking in the Boland Mountains, playing duster hockey and attending a SANJAMB (the national Jamboree for Guides and Scouts).  The biggest highlight for me was qualifying to sail in the Cape to Rio race in 2000 on the Scout yacht Rotary Scout.  It was an experience that I’ll never forget – living on a fairly small boat with 7 other crew members for a month, and the oldest person on the boat was 20 years old! We won our division which was nice too.

I look forward to this journey at Cubs as Akela for the next few years!
