Orienteering Competition
Last year was the first time 1st Claremont entered into the Orienteering competition for a long time. The Orienteering Competition is a competition where contestants follow a route and hit checkpoints as fast as possible.
We entered 2 teams, a senior team and a junior team consisting of Peter and Julia, and Avila and Laura respectively. Both teams did exceptionally well especially for their first time with no knowledge of what to expect.
The senior team achieved 17th out of 33 teams and the Junior team achieved 11th out of 27. I am exceptionally happy with their performance and I hope to improve our placing this year.

Quinn Trophy 2023
Quinn Trophy is a fun, random-activities based competition that happens annually in October. 2023 Was the first time that we entered in at least 10 years.
Much to our delight we placed 7th, which was very good for what was basically our first time. Scouts attending had fun taking part in volleyball, relay races, a general knowledge quiz and even remained unbeaten, even against a team of scouters, in bench ball. 1st Claremont also had scouts running in the Cross Country Competition, with 4 scouts placing in the top 5. Quinn Trophy was awesome and we will definitely be taking part next year! Thank you to Tim, Laura, Peter, Ethan, Sam, Sudi, Seth and Will for being on the team.

James’ Movie Night
The 4th of October, was a truly strange night. A bunch of teenagers, aged 11 to 17 begging to watch Cars and Surfs Up, staying up all night to eat popcorn and chips (bought from the tuck shop set up for fundraising) and making a swing out of a rope thrown over the rafters. The movie night was more than just a fundraiser for a Springbok event, it was a life changing experience, and a bonding moment. In the morning we had to wake up bright and early to fold up tents, soggy from Holly’s camp, to pack for PLP2 camp taking place later that day. The movie night was fun, to say the least, and a great way to raise funds as well as creating some long lasting memories. All in all, it was a great success for James.

Tim’s Car Wash
A fun and eventful afternoon. After a lot of scrambling around to get scouts branding stuff and organise equipment we started our carwash. We spent the afternoon waiting and cleaning and waiting and cleaning. We split the Group in half and set one group to wash the outside of the car and the other to clean the inside of the cars. This strategy was very good, until it didn’t work because we had too many or too few cars at one particular moment. All in all it was a very fun afternoon and was enjoyed by all who attended.

Laura’s First Class Cooking
On 9 December I ran my First Class Cooking at the scout hall. We made a butternut soup starter, the main was a Chilli NON – Carne (made with lentils and beans) and a rather brick-like apple pie for dessert. The meal was going well, until our fire started to die out, partly because of the strong winds, pushing the eating time back by 45 minutes. Thankfully, though, Caleb (who was judging the meal) arrived 45 minutes late, so besides the cold soup everything was on track. We took the apple pie off the fire to serve, well, it wasn’t really an apple pie, more like a lump of apple-y charcoal, and both Caleb and Holly (who was also judging) thought it was hysterical. All in all, I think it was a memorable experience.

Laura’s Cooks Meal
On Saturday the 2nd of December, Laura ran her Cooks meal. It was a really fun experience and I think everyone learnt how to cook at least one meal.
For the starter we made baked feta with burst tomatoes and chilli honey but before we could make it we had to bake the dessert as there was loadshedding later on.
The dessert was a delicious lime cake. While some people were making the cake batter the rest started to chop and prep the starter and the main by chopping vegetables.
After the cake was in the oven we got the starter ready to bake on the tray. Then some of us set the table and the rest started the main, we made burgers. One person made the patties and someone else chopped and fried onions. Once everything was prepped and cooked we made the drink which was strawberry lemonade.
Caleb (the judge) arrived at 16:30 and we ate and he judged the food. All the food tasted very good and it was a very successful meal

Jame’s Community Service Days 2 & 3
The day started off early and everyone was very excited to go to James Springbok Community Service.
For once (no offense to all the community services we’ve done) we were not doing weeding and we took the creative route. We were painting the walls of the playground of Woodside Special Centre. Before we started,
I took a scroll through Pinterest to decide on what painting I was going to do. I decided on a desert landscape and others chose things like starry nights, cars and dinosaurs. As we painted we quickly became acquainted with one of the residents named David. David loved music and especially loved Playboi Carti (James’ favourite rapper). We knew this as he frequently visited us when we played the music and would often sit near the speaker and bob his head.

The blistering heat cause did not stop the scouts from making Picasso level murals that should be put up in the Louvre. Even the one with a cloud that was repainted at least 5 times and a very sketchy caterpillar painted by me. The days were filled with fun and laughter and it was all for a good cause.
