National Challenge 2024: Health & Well-Being

The health and well-being of our members is vital if Scouting is to achieve its mission of developing well-rounded, skilled, confident, and active contributing citizens. Being in good physical and mental health enables personal growth and general well-being. In Scouting, it is the responsibility of all to take care and look after each other.

First Claremont cubs once again take on the National Challenge. This year long engagement is made up of five tasks (1) Connect, (2) Be active, (3) Give, (4) Take notice and (5) Keep learning.

As part of the keep active task we learned a new sport and learned some yoga including some useful breathing techniques to help us learn how to find calm in our lives.

The new sport we learned was Gurning: the practice of deliberately distorting your facial expression by projecting your lower jaw forward and up. And you guessed it is a traditional and competitive rural English tradition. The World Gurning Championship takes place annually at the Egremont Crab Fair. The fair dates back to 1267, when King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter.

Cubs were naturals! This made the judges’ work very difficult. In the end it was down to the finalists, Jocelyn B and Christopher dT, with Christopher eventually winning by popular vote.
