Cubs’ Sustainable Development Goals challenge

This year the cubs took part in the Sustainable Development Goals challenge for cubs, where they learned about clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and sustainable communities.

The Cubs watched videos about the importance of clean water and how to purity water depending on how polluted it is, and also how to build solar stills. In November the Cubs built tippy taps to demonstrate effective hand washing, and donated the taps to the Langa Community Action Network, Langa Bicycle Hub Branch, which was initially formed to help bring food to people who are not able to get to the soup kitchens. The LCAN distributed our tippy taps to several soup kitchens with which they work. After building the tippy taps, the cubs drew posters in their sixes explaining the water cycle, where water comes from in their homes, and the importance of safe drinking water. The cubs also learned that there are many people in our city, not far from where we live, who do not have access to clean running water in their homes.

The cubs also watched the short film “24 Leeches”, which was featured in the Banff selection in 2021. The film explores the fragility of the world, the importance of fresh water, and how to make a meaningful impact in the world.

The cubs did a book collection drive for the Learning In Reach NPO that supports ECDs in Lavender Hill.

The Cubs dressed up for our dream jobs, visited conservation sites (earning the Conservation Badge), watched videos and produced posters and dioramas on the topics covered.

As part of the Conservation badge, we invited Naas van Jaarsveld from the Cape Leopard Trust to talk to the cubs about the Cape Leopard, its habitat, and why it is endangered. This was one of our most popular online meetings.

At one of the last meetings of the year the cubs learned about energy, the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and how these impact on our daily lives. They also produced posters about the difference between climate change and
air pollution.
