Kalk Bay Caving

This was my first time caving…

I thoroughly enjoyed going caving. It was interesting and provided me with an excuse to eat a delicious shop bought lunch (which I know everyone always likes).  It was a boiling hot and sweaty day (just perfect). The hike up  consisted of steps, steps, steps and more steps. When the steps finally came to an end, guess what there was? Another 5 million kilometers to go. Despite this it was totally worth it when we got to the first cave. We walked in (or rather, if you define walking as crawling with your nose centimeters away from the ground, then yes) and saw….  nothing because we hadn’t turned our torches on. 
The caves had a musty smell of old bat, until I realized I was smelling myself. We found some unusual items there in the caves such as a candle, a tin and a piece of straw, oh wait , that’s my hair! On a slightly more serious note I have a new appreciation for pitch blackness and silence. If no one talked or made a noise and turned their torches off you couldn’t hear or see a thing. I really enjoyed that! We ate lunch in the amphitheatre (a circular piece of ground) — there was a lovely view and good climbing rocks. When I finally got home, and after I had removed a million bats and their droppings in my hair, I felt like I’d played 5 hockey matches, swam across the Atlantic and jumped into a pile of sand mixed with a touch of sweat and garnished with bat droppings.
