Scouts love to go hiking so it is fitting that there is a Hiking Challenge badge for Meerkats in the Scoutcraft theme. On 19 February, our nearly full Den of Meerkats gathered at the base of Newlands forest with their leaders, parents, siblings and a dog and went hiking, 4km up, along and down. We had previously discussed with these 5 and 6-year olds what is appropriate to take on a hike. Everyone enjoyed snack time at the apex under the huge trees as we looked down on where we had come from. Each Burrow Scouter also checked that the Meerkats could find two interested things, and some where amazing! At the end, the happy Meerkats received their badges and went home full of smiles and stories. How fortunate we are to live in the midst of the great outdoors!
