As part of the National Meerkat Challenge, our Meerkats explored renewable energy. On 13 November, at a regular meeting, each burrow made a solar cooker from a cardboard box and foil. This was quite a challenge, but the Meerkats went at it with gusto. We set out the cookers with smores in a sunny spot. All the Meerkats then released a lot of steam by trying to catch each other’s shadows.
It was so tiring everyone needed a drink of water.
Refreshed, the burrows rotated through four bases where they generated four different kinds of renewable energy. First base was conservation where the Meerkats turned off lights to “generate” energy by never using it in the first place. Next was hydropower where Meerkats poured water through a spinning bath toy. Next, they generated some wind power by running around with windmills. Finally, the Meerkats took turns uncovering a solar panel connected to a small fan.
After the closing ceremony and some well-deserved badges, the meerkats enjoyed their smores, well-cooked by this time with very gooey marshmallows and chocolate.
