Raising funds to replace our roof

Replacing the sagging asbestos roof over the stage has become an urgent priority. We were aiming to raise funds over 2-3 years, but last month a roofing engineer reported that the roof structure is unsafe and that we cannot use the area, so of course we can no longer wait 2-3 years to replace it.

We have quotes covering the majority of the work, and we expect that the replacement will cost between R250 000 and R275 000. While we do have some reserves for this, and have raised R28 400 so far in donations from families (over 10% of the total), we still have quite a way to go.

In recent years our income has come through annual subs, hall rentals, and occasional appeals for donations. This has been enough to fund our activities, maintenance and improvements, and to build up some reserves, but to pay for the roof we will need some more substantial fundraising.

We are therefore looking for a team to take charge of fundraising events that can be both a fun activity for the group and a source of substantial funds. If you would like to be part of that team, please let us know by 30 June so we can get started as soon as possible. 

Fundraising will probably need to go beyond the families of the group and include the general public. Some ideas that have been put forward include a trail run or mountain bike race, a wine auction, a quiz evening, or a golf day. Other Scout groups run these successfully, and we are hoping to find parents with expertise and contacts so that we can do the same at 1st Claremont.
