Pirate Meerkats!

Kon-tiki for Meerkats! Fifty Meerkats from all over the Western Cape descended on the Imperial Yacht Club (next to the main Kon-tiki venue) at Zandvlei and transformed it into a Pirate Kingdom. Assisted by their eager families, they made pirate hats, built rafts that sailed from recycling material, learnt how to play “Walk the Deck” and, most exciting of all, raced on land rafts with poles. Some of the bases were aimed at team work, and learning about what floats and what doesn’t. “Pirates” was certainly a theme that appealed to our five and six year olds.

The 1st Claremont Meerkats “sailed” from base to base and proved themselves to be excellent pirates. It was the first time that Meerkats in the Western Cape had met each other in person, and they examined scarves and badges for similarities and differences. Groups that took part with us were 1st Bothasig, 1st Durbanville, Durbanville-Kraaifontein, 1st Muizenburg and 6th Rondebosch. There will be future regional events, after the success of this one.
