Two of our 10 year old Cubs (Axel and Karina) took part in this year’s Senior Cub Camp in April. This is a Survivor-themed camp for cubs from across the Western Cape.
The camp started with the cubs arriving at Hawequas campsite late on Friday afternoon and taking part in some ice breakers as they meet their “tribes”. After supper they painted their banners; this was followed by a night hike activity. This year it was incredibly windy, which was an added challenge especially as Covid precautions meant many cubs were in their own tents.
During the camp, the cubs took part in Survivor-style challenges and learnt outdoor skills which they put to use throughout the weekend as they earned the Outdoorsman badge. The camp was smaller than usual this year, but still had a great impact with 46 Cubs attending from 25 different packs. It was good to be able to run the full event again, after last year’s event was scaled down to a single day due to Covid, and then battered by rainy weather.
A highlight of the camp was the campfire, brilliantly led by Joshua and the scout helpers on camp. It was held in the barn by torchlight as the gale force winds meant a fire was not possible, but spirits were high, and many cubs stayed up afterwards for a long and enthusiastic game of “priest in the parish”.
The regional Senior Cub Camp was started in 2016 by Simon Grantham (a former 1st Claremont Scout) and Valeska Gruenbaum. 1st Claremont has always been heavily involved in the course and, in 2022, Ian Webb and Fraser Hewson took over running of the event. We dedicated this year’s event in honour of Valeska, who died in 2021 of Covid.
