The Leaping Wolf Badge is an optional challenge to every Cub. Those who decide to take it on must work on their own and in their own time, to plan, execute and record their achievements. Cubs do this while they are still doing their Gold Wolf in their final year in the Cub Pack. While Pack Scouters and parents are there to help and advise, this badge is expected to be done independently. This helps prepare the cub for the Scout Troop, where they are expected to be independent.
Besides having to complete several advancements including a compulsory First Aid interest badge, the cubs have to:
- Green their community by planning and carrying out a planting project
- Show proficiency in scout craft by making a knotting display showing all ten knots they have learnt in preparation for building all sorts of constructions (pioneering) in scouts.
- Undertake a personal challenge within their home, school or social life which allows them to explore new things, challenge themselves and get out of their comfort zone.
- Research a technology of their choice, understand how it works and be able to share it with their peers but presenting their technology in action talk to the pack.
- Develop their good citizenship by finding out about a global issue such as poverty, conservation or water and sanitation and explore what they can do to help.
Finally, they record and report on their journey in a logbook. We are proud to say that several of our senior cubs have taken on this challenge and we would like to share some of this term’s highlights.
Mkhetheni (MK) performed a violin concert as part of his personal challenge. His goal was to raise funds for the St Joseph Marist College’s music room at MK’s school. His family, friends and school staff attended and supported him. All enjoyed the violin pieces that MK prepared and played for the event. MK did great and was accompanied by his violin teacher Mrs Elzahn Johnson Peterson. Later he mentioned how nervous he was, but Isabel and Oliver hadn’t noticed at all. Every cub who faces the leaping wolf challenge knows that it is a difficult one and MK was no exception. Well done MK!!

This term two of cubs, Sophia and Ben, completed their challenge. They put in a lot of time and effort to achieve their goal and received their leaping wolf badges. Here are some examples of their work:
Sophia:-

Ben:-

It was an emotional time when we wished farewell to Sophia and Ben. For them and for the rest of the pack. Change can be hard but we know that they are more than ready for this new challenge. We wish them all the best as we entrust them to the scout troop.
