Fernwood Scout Group (re)launched

In the 1990s and before, 4th Claremont was a thriving Scout group, and also our nearest neighbour, about 1km away in a hall they built in the 1960s in Almond Street, Fernwood. Bruce McIntyre, a former 1st Claremont Scout and Rover, was their Troop Scouter, and they had two strong Cub Packs led by Gill …

Lost property from annual camp

There is inevitably lost property on annual camp. The tradition has evolved among the scouts that to retrieve the more significant lost property, you have to apologise to it. The apologies this year were worthy of Oscars with some fine performances from willing scouts. The eagerness with which these apologies were made and the fine …

Nina staffs annual camp

When I arrived at Hawequas on the Thursday I was expecting a hot five days of pioneering and burnt food. However I was not expecting to be woken up on the first night at 1am next to Alex’s tent with him inside being blown off the edge of our campsite! Despite 90 km/h winds, as …

40 years later…..

One summer’s afternoon about 5 years ago, I was standing in line at Starbucks in Lake Oswego, Oregon,  USA. There are about 6 people ahead of me and the line is moving slowly. I’ve just had lunch, I’m tired and not paying attention. Anyway, I’m looking at the back of the head of the person in …

Meerkats explore renewable energy

As part of the National Meerkat Challenge, our Meerkats explored renewable energy. On 13 November, at a regular meeting, each burrow made a solar cooker from a cardboard box and foil. This was quite a challenge, but the Meerkats went at it with gusto. We set out the cookers with smores in a sunny spot. …
