I went on Senior Cub Camp at Hawequas on 5-7 April 2024. It is a camp for Cubs who are over 10 years old from all over the Western Cape Region.
I was in Imbeko tribe and our colour was yellow. There were 42 cubs split into 6 different tribes. I slept in a tent of 6 people for one night and for the other night I slept under a table in the Barn – it was very, very windy! The wind blew the roof off one building and it blew the power lines down so there was no power and we had to pack the tents away.
Each tribe made a banner and we went on a night hike. The next day we built shelters and did axe work. We cooked lunch of wors and stokbrood on fires ourselves and ate it – it was yummy. We had a relay race to collect materials to build a fire above the ground. For a challenge we also had to eat yukky food that was made to look like animal body parts (like “baboon poo” and “frogs eggs”). That evening we had a campfire inside because it was so windy.
Even though the weather was really bad, I had lots of fun and made new friends. I really enjoyed learning more about being a Scout and about the parts of the Scout Law.

1st Claremont had 4 Cubs at this year’s Senior Cub Camp (Diya, Christopher, Jenny and Payal), and 3 adults on the team (Fraser, Ian and Lucy). Read Ian’s report about the camp – and the gale-force winds – in the Western Cape Scouter.
